Predatory Nuns

Predatory Nuns PDF Author: Brian Titley
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476689571
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 173

Book Description
Since the first scandals broke in the mid-1980s, the sexual misconducts of priests have cost the Catholic Church in America more than $4 billion in compensation settlements and incalculable damage to its reputation. Although their crimes have attracted far less attention, predatory nuns have also caused harm. The depredations of these nuns took place in convent novitiates, orphanages, boarding schools for Native Americans, and in Catholic schools, both elementary and secondary. Their victims, male and female, ranged in age from six-year-olds to young adults. This book focuses on the criminal behavior of North American nuns and the responses from church leadership. Mothers superior were outspoken in their refusal to accept responsibility for the crimes committed under their watch, and their inclination was to close ranks and protect the predators, endangering many children and young people in the process. The complainants, on the other hand, were considered nuisances to be pushed aside with the least amount of exposure and expense possible. Straightforward and informative, this text begins by exploring the nuns' vow of chastity and its relationship with human sexuality, followed by dozens of case studies detailing the sexual abuse that nuns committed in various settings.

Queer Nuns

Queer Nuns PDF Author: Melissa M. Wilcox
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 1479820369
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
An engaging look into the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, queer activists devoted to social justice The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence make up an unlikely order of nuns. Self-described as “twenty-first century queer nuns,” the Sisters began in 1979 when three bored gay men donned retired Roman Catholic nuns’ habits and went for a stroll through San Francisco’s gay Castro district. The stunned and delighted responses they received prompted these already-seasoned activists to consider whether the habits might have some use in social justice work, and within a year they had constituted the new order. Today, with more than 83 houses on four different continents, the Sisters offer health outreach, support, and, at times, protest on behalf of queer communities. In Queer Nuns, Melissa M. Wilcox offers new insights into the role the Sisters play across queer culture and the religious landscape. The Sisters both spoof nuns and argue quite seriously that they are nuns, adopting an innovative approach the author refers to as serious parody. Like any performance, serious parody can either challenge or reinforce existing power dynamics, and it often accomplishes both simultaneously. The book demonstrates that, through the use of this strategy, the Sisters are able to offer an effective, flexible, and noteworthy approach to community-based activism. Serious parody ultimately has broader applications beyond its use by the Sisters. Wilcox argues that serious parody offers potential uses and challenges in the efforts of activist groups to work within communities that are opposed and oppressed by culturally significant traditions and organizations – as is the case with queer communities and the Roman Catholic Church. This book opens the door to a new world of religion and social activism, one which could be adapted to a range of political movements, individual inclinations, and community settings.

"A Zoo of Lusts…A Harem of Fondled Hatreds"

Author: Deveryle James
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443830771
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
“A Zoo of Lusts . . . A Harem of Fondled Hatred”: An Historical Interrogation of Sexual Violence against Women in Film explores the pernicious nature of rape in films from the silent era to the 21st century. Film is an excellent medium through which to hold this discussion, because film, like the body, as Judith Butler, et al. suggest, is fluid and indeterminate, and it is often contemplated as a site for negotiation and resistance. This book addresses three major questions: (1) why does rape persist as a recurring theme in film, (2) how is this subject manifested in film and (3) what does this manifestation say about the act of rape itself, its victims, its perpetrators and our culture? Rape is a sexual manifestation of aggression with the purpose of overpowering, humiliating, and hurting its victims. An examination of media accounts has revealed that before the evolution of feminist film theory and the dismissal of the Production Code, the rape victim in films usually fits into one “neat” set of criteria (e.g., young adult, white, single, middle class, heterosexual). When the victim’s physical makeup deviated from the traditional set of criteria (e.g., a child or a mature person of color, married, poor, homosexual), the rape was portrayed more violently. The research for this book dwells on the portrayal of the latter type of victims because their sexual violations evoke an absorbing commentary on society’s reaction toward those who do not easily fit within the status quo. What is it about the makeup of these victims that makes their violations more horrific?

Predator Priest

Predator Priest PDF Author: Robert J. McAllister, M.D., Ph.D.
Publisher: Dorrance Publishing
ISBN: 1480944254
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
Predator Priest By: Robert J. McAllister, M.D., Ph.D. When the small town of Springer, Montana, receives a new priest in the parish, retired psychiatrist-turned-rancher Bob Lee forges an unlikely friendship with the mysterious Father Brown. But when a young boy dies under strange circumstances, alone in the woods with the new priest, Springer is in the spotlight, and Bob Lee is go-between and confidant for the accused. Inspired by the worldwide prominence of sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy, Predator Priest will challenge readers’ attitudes and preconceptions regarding both victimizers and victims. In 50 years of psychiatric practice, the author has treated numerous victims of abuse and interviewed and treated clergy who were abusers. Building on that unique experience, the author offers a sympathetic portrait of a predator priest, calling on church authorities to do much more to lessen the prevalence of abuse and on the rest of us to have more understanding, and more compassion.

Katie Luther, First Lady of the Reformation

Katie Luther, First Lady of the Reformation PDF Author: Ruth A. Tucker
Publisher: Zondervan
ISBN: 0310532167
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
Katharina von Bora. Defiant and determined, refusing to be intimidated. . . In many ways, it was this astonishing woman (not even her husband, Martin Luther, could stop her) who set the tone of the Reformation movement. In this compelling historical account of a woman who was an indispensable figure of the German Reformation—who was by turns vilified, satirized, idolized, and fictionalized by contemporaries and commentators—you can make her acquaintance and discover how Katharina's voice and personality still echoes among modern women, wives, and mothers who have struggled to be heard while carving out a career of their own. Author and teacher Ruth Tucker beckons you to visit Katie Luther in her sixteenth-century village life: What was it like to be married to the man behind the religious upheaval? How did she deal with the celebrations and heartaches, housing, diet, fashion, childbirth, and child-rearing of daily life in Wittenberg? What role did she play in pushing gender boundaries and shaping the young egalitarianism of the movement? Though very little is known today about Katharina. Though her primary vocation was not even related to ministry, she was by any measure the First Lady of the Reformation, and she still has much to say to Western women and men of today.
